Look whos talking 2
As they are so cheap and relatively easy to make I did a couple more mirrors this week. I took the daring step (sense the sarcasm people) of using different wood for both these pieces as I am now thoroughly bored of mahogany. This is by area the biggest mirror I have done so far and so I thought I'd go for something a bit different for the frame. This is an exotic pine finish and as yet i haven't come up with a name for it! For a finish I decided to round of all the edges and my trusty ...
Closin' Shop
We have made the difficult decision to close up shop on this little blog for now. It's been a blast, but we need to set it aside for now. To be honest, we have too much on our plates right now. We're not going to delete it though, and maybe someday we'll be back. If you want to keep up with us, we'll both be posting (as we can) on our blogs: Heather Between and t(r)oymarbles. Thanks for reading!
When dish-pan hands become grace
When we first got married, Troy and I made a deal that I would do the cooking and he would do the dishes. Although he was better at doing the dishes, he definitely got the raw end of the deal. I am a very messy cook. For twenty years, Troy did the dishes 99.9% of the time. He washed dishes in Minnesota, in Illinois, and he washed more in Colorado. He washed them in Barcelona; where we had no dishwasher and often had 17 people for small group on Thursday nights. Then, we made it a financial priority to buy ...

Getting back into the swing of things: Stomp in Madrid
I’ve been here less than a week and have already experienced the sweltering heat in the city, the masses of tourists in Sol, a thunderstorm in our neighborhood, and an amazing dance performance on Gran Via. Yesterday was the last day of the Stomp International tour in Madrid. I am VERY glad that I arrived back ...
VBS
Thanks to Immanuel Baptist Church, which is only about a 10-minute walk away from us, our kids are attending VBS this week. Today was their first day and they came home bouncing off the walls with the fun they had. Our kids actually don't have much contact with "church" kids here in Madrid, so I think it's great that they are finding out that there are others like them in our city.I'm really grateful to IRC for providing this free ministry for our kids!
Parenting Book for a New Generation of Involved and Nurturing Fathers
Within weeks of getting pregnant, April had a stack of parenting books waiting on my nightstand, complete with neat, hand-written bookmarks telling me which chapters I needed to read. In nine months, I had learned everything about April giving birth, becoming a mother, and how I could support her. What I wanted and couldn’t find was a book by a normal guy telling me about becoming a dad. The last thing I needed was more expert advice, a ten-step plan or fancy pie charts. I just wanted someone to give it to me straight, “What was parenting going to be ...
an interesting date night with my honey
Heather and I had a date the other night that featured an interesting bit of dialogue. I read a book fairly recently by the rabbi/psychologist Edwin Friedman that introduced me to some concepts related to healthy “family systems.” In the book Friedman describes the concept of differentiation. So, the other night when Heather and I were on a date she went into a store called Tuesday Mornings and I went into Half-Priced Books next door. As we were going in, I said to her: “This is quite a date we’re having. You go one place and I go another.”She replied: ...
Tapas in Barcelona
On my last trip to Barcelona a couple of months ago, My good friend Gabriella who is always in the mood for good food and wine, joined me for a self-guided tapas tour one warm Saturday evening. After we got sidetracked at some fun shops on the Rambla de Catalunya and the Passeig de Gracia, we stopped at Cerveceria Catalana. If you are new to the idea of tapas and don’t mind being with others who are too, this is a great place to start. Its big, there is plenty of seating (not always common in tapas places) and it ...
Cultivating Joy Through Gratitude
I have to be honest. This is really difficult for me to do right now, which I think is all the more reason that I need to focus on gratitude and being thankful.34. God's crazy love for me; a broken, doubting, fallible, weak human.35. Brisk winter weather but with blue skies and sunshine.36. Veggie subs with friends.37. A clean house.38. Time to journal and prayer.39. Juicy Avenue.40. A full service again and the need for more chairs.41. Seeing people connect and form new friendships.42. Praying for Madrid and a heart of love for this city.43. Rend Collective Experiment.44. Sharing my ...
